Community Groups
The Godhead, as the Trinity of Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, is in perfect relationship with one another. Created in the image of God, we are made for community and connection too. As a church community we have an incredible opportunity to model the Trinity. We need to understand how important community is to God and also how important community is for the church’s health and mission. We believe the best way to build community is through community groups, weekly small groups that meet geographically around the Bay Area.
Why Community Groups?
The gospel creates a New Community. A Central theme which runs throughout the Bible is that God is creating a people who belong to Him. In both the Old Testament and the New Testament, the work of God is the calling of a people. He is not merely saving individuals; He is building a new community in which he is the central participant. He is forming a new society out of the ashes of a fallen and rebellious human race. The development of a community lies at the heart of God’s covenant promises: “I will be your God and you will be my people.” The church must take the call to be a new community with the utmost seriousness (Matthew 5:14; Romans 12:12; 1 Corinthians 12; 1 Corinthians 3:9; 1 Peter 2:5).
What is a Community Group?
A community group is a small group where Christian community is primarily developed, where Jesus Christ is experienced in His presence and power and where lives are transformed by the gospel through mutual ministry. In each community group there are specific balanced elements that make up a group and are organically experienced:
- Worship
- Bible Study
- Sharing
- Prayer
- Missions
COMMUNITY GROUPS ARE MUCH MORE THAN...
- Social Events – “We just get together, hang out and get to know each other”
- Prayer and Praise – “We get enough Bible teaching on Sundays and what we really need to do is praise the Lord together and pray”
- Bible Studies – “We need to get together and grow deeper in the Word”
- Accountability (sharing) – “I have a lot of superficial relationships but I want a group of committed Christians with whom I can share deeply with where we hold each other accountable”
- Missions – “We share about what is happening in the world and our city. We also pray for their needs and participate in local ministries”
